On 12 November 2016, Ireland beat Austria in Vienna to go top of the 2018 World Cup qualifying group. On 9 October 2017, Ireland defeated Wales 1–0 in Cardiff to qualify for the qualification play-offs. They went on to play Denmark in the play-offs. In the first leg of the play-offs on 11 November, Ireland drew 0–0 against Denmark in Copenhagen. In the second leg on 14 November in Dublin, Ireland lost 5–1 to Denmark after taking to the lead in the game.
