Placed in Group C of the 1998 World Cup, France’s early form could not have been better, winning all three of their opening matches against Denmark, South Africa and Saudi Arabia, scoring nine goals in the process. Finishing as Group C winners, they were to face Paraguay in the second round. The South Americans proved difficult to beat as France needed extra time to eventually win 1-0, setting up a quarter-final tie with fellow European favourites Italy. Again, France needed extra time and penalties to overcome the previous World Cup winners, the shoot-out finishing 4-3.

Croatia were now the only team preventing France from the World Cup final. The semi-final match between the two nations needed two Lilian Thuram goals to secure a 2-1 win and send France through to a much anticipated final match against tournament favourites Brazil. Brazil’s talented squad were to create few chances in the final, their prolific striker Ronaldo was reported to have suffered from a minor fit before kick-off. Two headed goals from Zinedine Zidane and a third from Emanuel Petit helped France win the Fifa World Cup for the first time in their history.

Zidane played as an attacking midfielder for the French national team, Juventus and Real Madrid. Zidane is widely considered by experts and fans as one of the greatest football players of all time. At club level Zidane won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid, two Serie A league championships with Juventus and an Intercontinental Cup and a UEFA Super Cup each with both aforementioned sides. Zidane has won the FIFA World Player of the Year three times, and Ballon D'Or (best European player of the year) once. He was also chosen as the best player of the year in Ligue 1, in Serie A and in La Liga and was awarded the 2006 FIFA World Cup Golden Ball, during his career. Zidane retired from professional football after the 2006 World Cup. He currently holds the post of Real Madrid Director of Football
