Having finished as runners-up on three previous occasions, Liverpool won their first FIFA Club World Cup after defeating Brazilian club Flamengo 1–0 in the final after extra-time, making them the first English side to win the international treble of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Liverpool were unsuccessful in their defence of the UEFA Champions League, exiting the competition in the Round of 16 following a 4–2 defeat across two legs after extra time to Atlético Madrid.
