This was Xavi’s first international tournament with Spain, wearing his first international squad number ‘19’. Although Xavi would grow into one of the finest players Spain has ever produced, he was relatively unappreciated until further on in his career when the virtues of his style of play became apparent. Spain finished on 9 points winning all their games during the group stage. They then beat the Republic of Ireland in the second round, only to be defeated by the tenacious South Koreans in the Quarter-finals.

Since making his international debut in 2000, he has been capped 119 times for the Spanish national team, with whom he won UEFA Euro 2008, 2010 World Cup and the UEFA Euro 2012. He was named Player of the Tournament by UEFA at UEFA Euro 2008. Xavi has won more trophies than any other Spanish player. Xavi has received five Ballon d'Or nominations, and finished in third place in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
